Premier Boxing Champions is Off and Running

A couple of weeks ago, I posted an announcement through NBC Sports that Al Haymon was able to ink a multi-year deal with them to create a boxing series with fights and fighters that were fairly popular in the sport, and many of them were coming from the Golden Boy stable. Now, with mostly everything set into place for Haymon, he has been hitting us with haymaker-style matchups for the Premier Boxing Champions series.

When the announcement was first made, the key component was broadcasting fights on the NBC Network, which would be the first time that boxing has been on network television since┬áCBS had a boxing telecast in December 2012. Two events that were announced to be on NBC are on March 6th when Keith “One Time” Thurman will face Robert “The Ghost” Guerrero and Adrien “The Problem” Broner will fight John Molina Jr., plus on April 11th the 140 pound championship will be on the line when Danny “Swift” Garcia faces Lamont Peterson. Now there is an announcement that the Premier Boxing Champions series will extend to the Spike network, with the first fight card being on March 13th.

At the StubHub Center in Carson California, two welterweight fights will take place as Roberto Garcia will take on Shawn Porter and Josesito Lopez will fight Andre Berto. These two match-ups should be a good barometer as to who will be serious contenders in the welterweight division. Porter was one of the hottest young fighters in the sport and was undefeated until he ran into Kell Brook who took him off his game and was able to give him his first defeat. Now he will try to bounce back against Roberto Garcia, a 34-year-old veteran who is riding an eight fight winning streak. Berto is another fighter who was like Porter as he was winning a good set of fights until he lost to Victor Ortiz in a classic back in 2011. He has lost two of his past three fights so this is a chance for him to once again be a contender in the welterweight division. Josesito Lopez did beat Victor Ortiz, but lost to Canelo Alvarez and Marcos Maidana after that. This may be a crossroads fight for him so he may have to come through on this to get back in the game.

This should be another component to get boxing more popular with some fans that may have lost interest and those who may want to start being a fan.
