There have been rumors floating around for over a month that Tampa Bay Lightning Captain Martin St. Louis wanted to be dealt to the New York Rangers. All of this came about after St. Louis did not make the Canada national team for the 2014 Sochi Olympics. Lightning General Manager, Steve Yzerman, is the president of the committee that decided who made that team.

At first St. Louis did not make the cut. Although Yzerman had the power to veto that board and put any player on, he did not do so for Marty. St. Louis has been one of the NHL’s top scorers all season long.

After fellow Lightning and Canadian Steven Stamkos, was not able to recover for a broken ankle in time for the Sochi Games, Martin took his spot on the Canadian nation team. As we know Canada won gold, but the rumors around St. Louis being traded lingered.

It is not sure if this is what led the Lightning Captain to request a trade or not. This is not the first time in St. Louis, more than a decade career, which he’s shown up on the GM’s door step wanting to be moved. We have learned from previous GM Brian Lawton that St. Louis asked to be traded in 2009, and to the Rangers none the less.

The Lightning give-up Martin St. Louis and his expiring contract for Rangers’ Captain Ryan Callahan, his expiring contract, the Rangers’ second round pick in 2014, and first round pick in 2015.

Callahan is most likely just going to be rental for the Lightning. Marty will most likely get a new contract from the Rangers, for how much and how long, has yet to determine. That deal could be one that gets finished before that end of the season. Marty will be 39 this summer, so we can pretty throw a contract longer than two or three years.
