Arguably the best player in the National Football League, Green Bay Packers quarterback Aaron Rodgers, was carted off the field mid-October with a broken collarbone suffered in against the Vikings in Minnesota. The team announced on October 16 that their star would need surgery to repair his clavicle, and could be out for the season.

Has Aaron Rodgers played his last game for Green Bay?

This is a question that will continue to build the closer we get to the off-season and with the unlikelihood that he will return this season. Rodgers is under contract with the Packers through 2019, but his contract has an opt-out clause in 2018 which he could exercise to test the open market. According to Spotrac, his marketing value would be around $28.2 million, which would edge out Detriot Lions QB Matt Stafford as the highest paid player in league history.

We can’t be so nieve to think that NFL teams aren’t thinking or talking about making a run at the player that moves the line more than any other player in the game today. Historically, the Packers haven’t exactly shown the most effort to sign free agents and build a better team around their franchise QB. I’m not saying that more investment in the offensive line or a deeper stable of skill players would have prevented those injuries. However, we can agree that solidifying the offense in those areas would be beneficial. Conversely, spending money to fill some of the holes on the defensive side, could result in fewer plays where he is subject to hits that could knock him out of the game.

Of course, Green Bay could and may have started to work on an extension now rendering the opt-out moot. It’s tough for to build logic around how the best player in the game wouldn’t want to at least entertain options. In the worst case, he ends up the Packers single caller for the next half decade or so.

I’m not saying that Rodgers is planning to hold-out or opt-out, just don’t be surprised when this becomes a thing.
