Griffey and Piazza are now Hall of Famers

The 2016 Class of the Baseball Hall of Fame is now set…and this year has only two people make the cut.

Ken Griffey Jr. and Mike Piazza were the only ones to get more than 75% of the vote required to be inducted to the Hall of Fame. Griffey received the highest percentage of anyone to be inducted, as 99.3% (437 of 440) or the voters placed him on their ballots. Mike Piazza was on 365 out of 440 ballots, which was 83 percent. No one else was on 75% of the ballots, with the closest one being Jeff Bagwell being on 315 ballots.

Griffey was one of the greatest outfielders of his time, and one of the most well-liked players of his generation. He ended his career with 630 home runs, 1,836 RBIs, and won 10 Gold Glove Awards. A 13 time All-Star, Griffey was a dynamic player that many compared to the great Willie Mays. He was with the Mariners from 1989 until 1999 then had a stint with the Reds for over 8 seasons before he had a brief stop with the White Sox, then returned to Seattle to close his career. He is ranked in the top 10 all time in home runs and in the top 15 in RBIs.

Mike Piazza did nearly everything as a catcher for the Dodgers and the Mets. He was the Rookie of the Year in 1993 as a Dodger and also became a six time All-Star in Los Angeles before joining the Mets in 1998 (was on the Florida Marlins before being in New York). Although he never won a Gold Glove Award, he was still considered one of the best catchers during the time he played. He ended his career being the all time leader in home runs by a catcher with 427 home runs. He was a key part in the Mets getting to the World Series in 2000 and added another six All-Star Game appearances while playing for them.

Many fans of the sport and the players will look forward to seeing both Griffey and Piazza in Cooperstown in July and I am sure that both of these guys will be excited to see their name alongside the other greats that are already there.
