The Georgia Bulldogs will return to Mercedes-Benz Stadium on Monday January 8th as they were able to win the College Football Playoff semifinal game against Oklahoma in double overtime 54-48. They await the winner of the Alabama-Clemson game at the Sugar Bowl.

Sony Michel scored the game winning touchdown with a 25 yard run after the Georgia defense blocked a field goal attempt by kicker Austin Seibert. This win completed a comeback from a 31-14 deficit in the second quarter where Oklahoma seemed to have all the momentum with a touchdown reception by Baker Mayfield.

After getting a field goal to close the first half, Georgia scored by way of a 50 yard run by Nick Chubb. Michel scored on a 38 yard run to tie the game in the third quarter, and then an interception by Mayfield in the fourth led to a short touchdown pass by Jake Fromm to give them the lead. Oklahoma responded with two scores, with the second coming off a fumble by Michel returned by Steven Parker.

Fromm led the Bulldogs down the field in a seven play, 59 yard drive which was capped off by a run by Chubb to tie the game with under a minute left in regulation. In overtime, both the Sooners and the Bulldogs ended their drives with field goals.

Oklahoma had an opportunity to get the lead in the second overtime, but a failed third down attempt from the Sooners led to the blocked field goal and Georgia took advantage with Michel’s fourth touchdown of the game.

With this being their first appearance in the College Football Playoff, Georgia now has a shot to win their first national championship since 1980.
