Guess what a 5-0 record on a team that lost 24 of its previous 27 games gets you? Up to 137.5 million dollars.

That is what San Francisco 49ers quarterback Jimmy Garappolo got in his new deal that was signed on Thursday as the franchise made him their marquee guy for the next five years. His contract on average surpasses the one that Lions quarterback Matthew Stafford signed as the most lucrative contract in NFL history. Jimmy was acquired via trade from the New England Patriots for a second round pick, and the impact that he had on the field made the front office make a decision to sign him for a long term deal.

“You have our assurances – and the fans do – that we’d like nothing more than to make (Garappolo) a Niner for a long, long time,” 49ers general manager John Lynch stated at the press conference for this announcement.

His numbers weren’t necessarily great on paper – 1,560 yards passing with 7 touchdowns and 5 interceptions – but the record is what stands out and as a quarterback in the NFL, you are mainly judged by your record. Garappolo has not lost a game as a starter in the league, and while that unbeaten record may not last the Niners hope that he puts the team in situations where they can win games.

Raj Mathai of NBC Bay Area was the first to report on the agreement made between the 49ers and Garappolo.
