College Football Playoff Now Set

This afternoon, the College Football Playoff Selection Committee made their decision as to who will be playing in the 2018 College Football Playoff.

In the Rose Bowl, Oklahoma (Big 12 Champion) will face Georgia (SEC Champion) and Clemson (ACC Champion) will face Alabama (SEC West runner-up) in the Sugar Bowl. Both games will be played on January 1st with the Rose Bowl being the first game and the Sugar Bowl on primetime in the east coast. The top four rankings at the end of the regular season had Clemson #1 followed by Oklahoma, Georgia, and Alabama.

Clemson returns to the College Football Playoff for the third consecutive year and will have a chance to defend its national championship that they won in Tampa at Raymond James Stadium. They hope to reach the Mercedes Benz Superdome to become back-to-back national champions. Last night, they defeated Miami in the ACC Championship Game 38-3 where they pitched a shutout until the 4th quarter. Kelly Bryant had an efficient performance and the defense dominated the Hurricanes. Many expected them to not be as good this year as the team that won it all, but they have not missed a step and are once again one of the best teams in the country.

Oklahoma had a stumble against Iowa State on October 7th, but they have not lost since. They beat their rivals Texas and Oklahoma State, plus TCU twice in order to become the Big 12 Champions. They also have a win on the road against Ohio State who are the Big Ten champions this year. Baker Mayfield has been the unquestionable leader of the team and is most likely going to win the Heisman Trophy. He hopes to end his collegiate career with a national championship.

They will face Georgia, who beat Auburn 28-7 on Saturday to become the SEC champions. They redeemed their loss to the Tigers on November 11th by rushing for 238 yards in the SEC Championship Game in Atlanta plus holding the rushing attack of Auburn and limiting Jarrett Stidham to 170 yards of total offense. Jake Fromm played much better in this game than their first encounter, and his overall play has been key to the run that the Bulldogs have had to get to this point. They will utilize that and a stingy defense against Oklahoma in the Rose Bowl.

Alabama is the only team involved in the playoff without a conference title, but they will be the only team to reach the College Football Playoff in each year that it has been in existence. They will face Clemson for the third consecutive year in the playoffs, and they want to have a 2-1 record against the Tigers. If they win that game and then win the title game in Atlanta, then head coach Nick Saban will have his second national championship in three years and five titles as an Alabama head coach.
