Chris Paul gets traded to Houston

By James Bell

In one of the most surprising moves at the beginning of the NBA offseason, the Los Angeles Clippers traded their veteran point guard to the Rockets for Patrick Beverley, Lou Williams, Sam Dekker, and a first round pick in the 2018 NBA Draft (Top-3 protected). Chris Paul was due to get 24.2 million dollars from the Clippers if he stayed with them this season, as he chose to keep his current deal instead of opting out.

Paul had been with the Clippers for six seasons after being a member of the Hornets for the start of his career and has been an All-Star nine times. His play will add in to the roster in Houston which has MVP runner-up James Harden plus Trevor Ariza, Ryan Anderson and Clint Capela being the key contributors to the team. The Rockets still have a few guys that will be free agents in the offseason and the decision will be to sign them again or let them go, but this move here looks to be an upgrade for the Rockets to be a NBA championship contender.

For the Clippers, they get a defensive-minded point guard in Beverley and a scorer in Lou Williams (who was traded to Houston before the season ended). Dekker contributed for the Rockets much more in his 2nd year in the league than in his rookie year, playing in over 70 games this season. They will join Blake Griffin and DeAndre Jordan in Los Angeles where it seems like the franchise is looking to see where it can go now after its run with Paul, Griffin, and Jordan did not reach their expectations.
