Canelo and Golovkin Reach An Agreement…

The aftermath of the court proceedings between Saul “Canelo” Alvarez/Golden Boy Promotions and All-Star Boxing have commenced and what has the sporting world buzzing is that Canelo and Gennady Golovkin have reached an agreement to fight each other for the middleweight championship. There is a caveat, however…

The fight will not take place until 2017.

That’s correct, the much-anticipated bout between the WBA “super”/WBC/IBO middleweight champion Gennady Golovkin and the Ring Magazine or “linear” middleweight champion Canelo Alvarez that would have been ordered to take place later this year via the WBC mandate is now verbally agreed to happen in the fall of 2017. The teams from each camp talked about this earlier this week after Canelo lost the lawsuit that was filed against him by All-Star Boxing and was ordered to pay 8.5 million dollars to the promotional company while Golden Boy Promotions – who was also included in the lawsuit – was cleared of any wrongdoing. Tom Loeffler of K2 Promotions (who handles Golovkin) stated that doing the fight in September would be too soon so they would “prefer it for next year.”

This will disappoint a lot of fight fans that were looking forward to a big fight in September which usually happens every year in the sport. For a few years, Floyd Mayweather was the boxer who had big events on that month, but now that he has retired, some other boxer may have to take that place. As for now, the two fighters that are among the most well-known in the sport of boxing will have to wait another year to face each other.

UPDATE – As of July 3rd, Saul “Canelo” Alvarez will be facing Liam Smith for the WBO light middleweight championship at the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas on September 17th. He will step down from the middleweight division to fight Smith, while Gennady Golovkin is in the middle of negotiations to fight Chris Eubank, Jr. for the unified middleweight titles.
