Alabama’s defense leads to win over Clemson in the Sugar Bowl

The third meeting in the College Football Playoff in three years between Alabama and Clemson was well anticipated, but the game did not bring the excitement that the last two games did. Alabama ended up winning this time around 24-6 in order to meet Georgia for the National Championship Game.

Key plays by the Alabama defense that led to two touchdowns was the difference in a game that featured the defenses of both teams. In the third quarter, Clemson was driving the ball down the field to Alabama’s 42 yard line with the score 10-6 in Alabama’s favor when Tigers quarterback Kelly Bryant was pressured into throwing an interception to Da’Ron Payne who returned it to the Clemson side of the field. Payne eventually got on the field near the goal line to score a touchdown and then on the next offensive possession Bryant threw another interception to Mack Wilson for a touchdown to give the Tide an 18 point lead. Neither team would score a point after that.

The story going into the game was how would Alabama’s defense perform after losing their last regular season game to Auburn and with a lot of their key players injured. They responded by bottling up the Clemson offense to just 188 total yards and no touchdowns. The defensive line limited a rushing attack that averages 204 yards a game to just 64 yards, and they could not convert on third downs going 8-19.

Although Alabama quarterback Jalen Hurts wanted to redeem himself in a way from last year’s loss to the Tigers in Tampa, he did well enough just to get them the win. He got two passing touchdowns on a 16-24 passing day. Hurts did not have a lot of offensive production and he did have a lost fumble in a hand-off, but that did not derail the team from getting the win at the Sugar Bowl.

Next Monday, Alabama hopes to get their second College Football Playoff National Championship and their fifth title overall since 2009.
